ARTS & CULTURE
Southern Indiana boasts a rich history as a gateway to the North. This history is woven into the area’s fabric. Many public art projects are dedicated to this. Stop in The Carnegie Center for Art and History to see both historical exhibits and contemporary art installations that interpret current events and speak to Indiana’s culture.
For information about other art events, the Arts Council of Southern Indiana and Jeffersonville Arts Alliance are good bets. Both develop and preserve the dynamic cultural and artistic richness in our area.
Jeffersonville Arts Alliance, with the Jeffersonville Public Art Commission, holds “JAM sessions” where artists and arts educators join the community in creating public art. The commission regularly invites submissions for new projects that contribute to the arts.
We’re not just makers here; we’re performers, too.
Theater is a big deal in SoIN. The area supports a vibrant stage culture, with award-winning performing arts programs, as well as professional theater companies. Young people have ample opportunities to participate while in school, and then step into professional roles. Derby Dinner Playhouse and Theatreworks of Southern Indiana are just two of the companies that you can sample when you visit.
