Charlestown State Park celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026! Developed on former Indiana Army Ammunition Plant land beginning in 1995, the park officially opened to visitors in October 1996 and has since grown to cover more than 5,000 acres.
While it’s one of Indiana’s newest state parks, there’s plenty of ground and stories to uncover. Today, visitors can explore miles of scenic hiking trails, river overlooks and rich Southern Indiana history all in one destination. Keep reading for 30 reasons why you’ll love Charlestown State Park!
1. The Hike to Rose Island
This trek is worth the effort. Be prepared – the paved path downhill and the intense climb back up is not for the faint of heart! Bring some water and bring a buddy if you are pushing a stroller. Need extra assistance? Call ahead to get a van transport to the trail from park staff.
2. Portersville Bridge
When you cross the Portersville Bridge to access the island, make sure you pause to take in the scenery and grab a photo op with your crew!
3. Rose Island Arches
These iconic arches are like a portal to the past.
4. Rose Island Ruins
Rose Island was a thriving amusement park in the 1920s. Its extensive amenities included a swimming pool, small zoo, Ferris wheel, shooting gallery, cafeteria, and more. Unfortunately, the 1937 Flood destroyed the park beyond repair, but some of the resort’s remains can still be seen through its mile-long loop.
5. Guided Rose Island Tours
While it can be fun to explore alone, those who want to learn more about Rose Island’s history can join a guided tour. Check with park staff to see when tours will be offered next. Check their website ahead of time for scheduled hikes and programs.
6. The Scenic Views of the Ohio River
Take in sweeping views of the Ohio River from scenic overlooks throughout the park. Charlestown Landing and the Riverside Overlook have some of the best views and are also the most accessible.
7. Fourteen Mile Creek
Fourteen Mile Creek flows through the park’s scenic valley. Enjoy peaceful views of the creek and explore the surrounding landscape on trails 1, 3, 4 & 5.
8. Charlestown Landing Boat Launch
If you’d like to spend the day boating, you can drive to Charlestown Landing, located at the Southern tip of the park. Pro tip: take one of the most scenic hikes on Trail 6 to kick off your morning before spending the day on the water.

10. Over 16 Miles of Hiking Trails
There are more than 16 miles of marked hiking trails, the longest of which is 3.1 miles. Pick one or link together for extra mileage.
11. There’s a Hike for Every Skill Level
Charlestown State Park has some gorgeous scenic trails ranging from easy to rugged. Select an easy trail, like the 3.1-mile 5K course, a moderate trail that leads to a waterfall, or a rugged trail climbing through rock outcrops.
12. The Park’s Storied History
While hiking the rugged terrain, you will see Devonian (that’s pre-dinosaurs!) fossils. The park also sits on land that was once the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant, built to supply the U.S. military during WWII.
13. The Dramatic Landscape
During the Ice Age, glaciers slowly created the river and local landmark, Fourteen Mile Creek. The park features a dramatic and varied topography characterized by gently rolling highlands, steep wooded bluffs, deep ravines and karst sinkhole formations.
14. Wildlife & Birdwatching
The park is home to 72 species of birds, multiple fish species, reptiles and amphibians, and forest mammals like deer, raccoons and squirrels.
15. The Spring Wildflowers
Early April to late May is prime time for many of Indiana’s native wildflowers. Blooming periods for each of these wildflowers vary, so you never know what you will find along the trails.
16. The Fall Foliage
The park is exceptionally beautiful when the temperature begins to drop and the leaves change, making it one of our top fall foliage spots in SoIN!
17. Fishing
The park has many good spots for stream-bank fishing along 14 Mile Creek on Trail 3. Bass, bluegill, catfish and other game fish are common catches.
18. Camping Opportunities
The park has an incredible camping space conveniently located near the majority of the trails. Located near the Park Office and picnic shelters, the campground has 60 full hook-up sites, 132 electric sites and offers reservations in advance.
19. Interpretive Programs
Have fun while learning something new at one of the park’s interpretive programs. Rose Island guided tours, Full Moon Hikes and Bird Walks occur frequently. Keep your eye out for the occasional cemetery hike.
