Freshwater Mussels are one of Indiana’s most imperiled groups of animals. Over half of Indiana’s 79 species are now considered extirpated or listed as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need. Over-harvest, habitat alteration/degradation, water quality issues, and impacts by non-native species have all contributed to their decline. Brant Fisher, with the Division of Fish & Wildlife, will explore their interesting biology, unique life history strategies, and the current restoration activities for freshwater mussels in Indiana.
