Cyanotype Workshop With Artist Tammy Burke

  • June 15, 2024
  • 630 Walnut St., Jeffersonville, IN 47130

Come out to the park and experiment with cyanotypes! The cyanotype process has existed nearly since the inception of photography itself, and cyanotypes are immediately recognizable by their vibrant cyan blue tones. The process is quite simple, using light-sensitive iron salts—potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate—rather than light-sensitive silver salts. The salts are sensitive to ultraviolet light and the image is produced through contact printing by pressing a negative or object directly to the surface and exposing the paper to sunlight. In this workshop, participants will use natural or found materials to create patterns on photosensitized paper to take home. We will also do a collaborative project that will later be displayed in Origin Park’s Event Center. Natural objects will be available for use, but participants are also encouraged to bring objects from home to use in their compositions, such as lace, jewelry, or other materials with distinctive patterns or silhouettes.

Please dress for the weather and bring a refillable water bottle. Dogs are welcome if well-behaved and on leash. Origin Park is for everyone: if you have any accommodation needs, please email info@riverheritageconservancy.org and we will do our best to help. This program involves a minimum amount of moving around on flat terrain and working while seated or standing. Please note that while our programs are usually rain or shine, sunlight is required to develop the cyanotypes and so the program will be rescheduled if the weather is overcast or rainy. Please monitor your email inbox the day prior and morning of if the weather is not promising.
